In the face of climate change, rapid urbanization, and environmental degradation, Albania faces growing water-related risks, including flooding, droughts, and declining water quality. Traditional water infrastructure alone (ex. pipes and treatment plants) cannot keep up with these challenges—it is costly, requires high maintenance, and sometimes fail to adapt to climate changes. Nature-Based & Green-Grey Solutions provide a proven, cost-effective, and climate-resilient alternative to conventional approaches. By working with nature rather than against it, these solutions can enhance Albania’s water security, restore ecosystems, and reduce infrastructure costs.
We actively support the implementation of Nature-Based and Green-Grey infrastructure in Albania by:
- Restoring and protecting natural water areas: Wetlands, floodplains, and riverbanks act as natural water purifiers and flood protectors. We work to restore degraded ecosystems and promote river basin management that enhances natural flood absorption.
- Making Cities More Water-Resilient: Heavy rain in cities can cause flooding and water pollution. We advocate for green urban infrastructure—such as rain gardens, green roofs, and permeable pavements—to reduce flood risks, enhance groundwater recharge, and improve water filtration.
- Integrating NbS into wastewater treatment: Instead of relying only on expensive treatment plants, we support the use of artificial wetlands and natural filters that clean wastewater in an eco-friendly way—reducing costs and energy use.
- Mitigating the impacts of drought and climate change: By promoting reforestation, soil conservation, and smart irrigation systems, we help increase water retention, reduce evaporation, and support long-term water availability in drought-prone areas.
- Enhancing coastal and marine protection: Coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion threaten Albania’s marine and freshwater ecosystems. We support natural coastal defenses like planting vegetation and restoring wetlands to protect communities from sea-level rise and extreme storms.
